I've been using Ubuntu on my new HP laptop for a few weeks now. Since about two weeks, the performance was dramatically decreased by a factor 10, rendering the whole setup quite useless, and the expensive laptop not worthwhile. Tonight I found the solution, and it is bizarre:

Nevertheless, it is solved. I just wanted to spare you the frustration, should you ever encounter the same problem.
