TomTom One not charging: fix »
FERDY CHRISTANT - MAR 25, 2008 (06:35:42 PM)
Since about a year I own a TomTom One navigation system. Since a few weeks, it fails to charge in the car charger. It does charge when connected to the computer though. I initially thought this was due to the car charger cable being broken, so I bought a new one.
The new cable did not work either, though. Looking into the issue further, I noticed that the charge light of the TomTom does not light up unless I manually jam the car charger in with a bit of force. Without the manual help, it simply does not make contact and charge. The solution is to strip a few mm from the car charger cable (on the side of the cable that connect to the device) using a small cutting blade. With the cable stripped, it will mount to the device properly and charge again. You can see this from the green light on top of the TomTom One.
Appearantly this is a very common TomTom issue, so I hope this helps anyone.

Yes that did solve it for me. It felt as strange to me as it does to you, but it really helped, it started charging again. Unfortunately, two weeks later it was getting unpredictable, sometimes it charged, sometimes not. Eventually, it took it to the service center and they repaired it by installing a new panel. Now it works as it should, using both my old and tweaked cable. If you still have warranty, I recommend you send it for repair, otherwise, the cable tweak may be a cheap solution. «

I am hoping someone can help me resolve this issue so I don't have to purchase a new GPS. I was having problems charging the Tom Tom, so I bought a new charger / power adapter. Basically, the piece in the GPS that you attach the charger detached from the whole unit. It is loose piece. Can this problem be fixed by superglue? Where can I find a repair center in Southern California? Thank you for your help. «

remove the battery from the case and stick it to the metal shield on the back of the circuit board and plug it back in. Go to your car and plug the charger in.
You may at this point notice that one of the feet on the mini-usb female socket soldered to the board has become detatched. mine was the top left one. with a very small screwdriver press it down the best you can. Applying pressure to the socket at the top seems to make the LED on the top of the device come back on. I then applied a drop of superglue gel to my screwdriver, pressed the socket down until the light came on and then applied glue to the sockets foot contact covering it liberally.
Hold it for a couple of minutes with the light on and I assure you it'll stay on.
then its just a case of re-assembling it.
I also glued the plug in place on mine.
The reason this happens is because the sucker for the windscreen is crap and it falls off often enough to fall onto the plug in the socket knocking it off the board. This is why newer sat-navs always have the sockets on the side nowadays.
Hope this helps anyone else stuck in this predicament. «

A common problem on this model, the mini USB type A/B Recepticle is not great and also the build quality leaves a little to be desired.
The easiest & best way to solve this once & for all is to buy a new USB connection (£1.07 RS Cpmponents / £1.22 Farnell) be careful heating the old one to remove as there's small caps quite near. when out replace by soldering the 5 pins at the back and the 4 on the case. As Simon mentioned, sometimes the actual pad can lift, drop some sonibond on it & wait for it to cure.
100% guaranteed fix, don't wast your cash replacing batteries & charger cables etc...
Cheers all,
Stevie....... «

I just bout my tomtom Start 20 today and cannot charge via USB at all (cannot see green light), so not sure if its charging (no other signs - the screen is now dark). With all your experiences above, would I be better off returning this product? As it looks pretty common problem with this device from your comments above.
Thanks for your suggestions in advance!
Cheers!
